Tahoe Kitchen Remodel — What the Process Actually Looks Like Start to Finish

A lot of homeowners start planning a kitchen remodel without a clear picture of what the process actually involves — especially in a market like Tahoe where permit lead times, material logistics, and remote ownership add complexity. Here's what it actually looks like from start to finish.

Step 1: Site Visit and Scope Development (Week 1–2)

The process starts with a site visit where we assess the existing kitchen: cabinet configuration, plumbing stub-out locations, electrical panel and circuit load, ventilation options, and structural constraints. We discuss your goals, your budget range, and your timeline. Within a week, we provide a written scope with itemized costs. The scope covers materials, labor, permit fees, and a contingency allowance. What's in the document is what you pay.

Step 2: Design and Material Selection (Week 2–6)

Once the scope is agreed and a deposit is placed, material selection begins. Cabinet style and finish, countertop material and profile, appliance specs, tile, lighting, and fixtures — these all need to be selected before a permit application is submitted and before any lead times begin. We walk clients through selections systematically, present options at different price points, and lock down choices before construction starts. Late decisions are the single biggest cause of Tahoe remodel delays.

Step 3: Permit Submission (Week 3–4, parallel with selections)

We submit the permit application to Placer or Nevada County as soon as the scope is finalized — not after selections are done, but in parallel. Permit review takes 4–8 weeks. Running it in parallel with your material lead times (often 6–14 weeks for cabinets) means you're not losing time. We track the permit and respond to any plan check comments promptly.

Step 4: Construction (6–10 Weeks)

Demo typically starts with cabinets and appliances, then rough plumbing and electrical modifications, then drywall, then cabinet installation, countertop templating and fabrication, tile, appliances, fixtures, and punch-list. For out-of-area owners, we send photo updates at every major milestone. You don't need to be on-site for most of the process — though a walkthrough at cabinet installation is often worthwhile if you can make it.

Step 5: Final Walkthrough and Sign-Off

We do a thorough final walkthrough before you sign off — checking every door, drawer, appliance, fixture, and finish surface against the original scope. Any punch-list items are addressed before the project is closed. We pull the final permit inspection before we leave. You get a clean, finished kitchen and a permitted, inspected job on record with the county.

Total Timeline for a Tahoe Kitchen Remodel

From initial site visit to move-in: plan for 16–24 weeks for a full kitchen remodel. The permit and material lead times account for most of that. Active construction is typically 6–10 weeks. This is longer than most homeowners expect — but rushing the front end is how projects go sideways.
